Rhiain Lefton is a British landscape photographer who grew up and lives in the Lot department of south-west France. She graduated from the University of Sussex with an MA (Hons) in Critical Theory and from the Royal Horticultural Society with a Diploma in Horticulture, and has studied photography.
Rhiain exhibits and sells her photographs in France and abroad. She takes commissions, gives immersive landscape photography courses and offers creative mentoring.
Rhiain began her photographic work in the darkroom, then, fascinated by the subtle tones and colour palettes of the natural world, she chose digital. She develops her work by immersing herself in a landscape for several years, familiarising herself with the local biodiversity and the temporal changes that affect plant life, both momentary (light, weather) and cyclical (geology, climate, ecology), while at the same time researching the history of the place, mainly through oral transmissions from local people and archives. The photographs call for a reversal of climate collapse through their contribution to thinking about land use, and through an embodied sense of the natural world where the boundaries between humans and nature are challenged. The work is part of a growing field of ecological photography that is in dialogue with discussions around the Anthropocene.
